By 2029–30, the gig workforce is expected to reach 23.5 million, contributing significantly to economic growth. However, challenges like algorithmic transparency, data privacy, and worker rights persist. While the Code on Social Security, 2020, recognises gig workers and proposes social protections, gaps remain in addressing income instability and algorithmic surveillance. State initiatives like Rajasthan’s welfare board show promise, but India lacks comprehensive AI-specific regulation. Efforts like Telangana’s AI-Powered Strategy aim to bridge gaps, but urgent reforms are needed for inclusive growth.
