India's job crisis: Will Budget 2025–26 Bring Relief?

The Union Budget 2025–26 attempts to address India’s growing employment crisis, particularly for informal workers, gig workers, and marginalised entrepreneurs. With youth unemployment at 10.2% and overall joblessness rising, budgetary measures such as the revamped PM SVANidhi scheme, gig worker social security provisions, and credit access initiatives aim to provide economic relief. However, concerns persist regarding implementation challenges, financial resource allocation, and systemic gaps in labour protections. This op-ed critically examines the effectiveness of these interventions, questioning whether they provide meaningful employment security or merely serve as short-term solutions without addressing structural vulnerabilities in India’s labour market.
