Hate speech is an intricate and multifaceted reality that poses significant risks to democratic nations. Its consequences extend far beyond mere words, leading to physical harm, social isolation, heightened tension, increased anxiety, and depression, among other detrimental effects. Understanding the origins, patterns, and impact of hate speech is crucial for developing effective interventions and policies to combat it. This is particularly relevant in today's context, where the proliferation of social media platforms has facilitated the rapid dissemination and amplification of hate speech.
This research paper aims to explore hate speech from a multi- disciplinary perspective, encompassing psychological, social, legal, and technological dimensions. The paper also explores the origins and limitations of hate speech laws in India, highlighting the challenges of defining it within the existing legal framework. It adopts a secondary research approach, drawing upon existing literature and the insights of scholars who have extensively studied hate speech in India. By incorporating diverse perspectives, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic.
Additionally, the paper also mentions our project which focuses on analyzing hate speech reporting in India using data-driven methods. The project uses Latent Dirichlet Allocation for topic modeling, revealing underlying themes. Overall, it contributes to a comprehensive understanding of hate speech reporting and can guide future interventions and policies for a safer online environment.
